Cuts to Welfare Payments for School Non-Attendance: Requested or Imposed?

Posted on November 17, 2011

concerned Australians have published an excellent report focusing on links between cuts to welfare payments and school attendance in the NT. The Federal Government has recently announced plans to cut welfare payments to parents when children don’t attend school. The Government says that Aboriginal people have asked for this.

concerned Australians have based their report on transcribes of Government community consultations and public meetings held in the NT between June and August 2011. The report clearly shows that community priority concerns are quite different to those reported by the Government. In particular, this report shows that rather than ‘asking’ for punitive welfare measures communities clearly identified barriers to education and attendance and also clearly identified solutions and support that was needed.
